3 Unexpected Things That Could Ruin Your Glasses

If you wear glasses, you know that they can be prone to scratches or other damage if you’re not careful. But did you know that you could be harming your eyeglasses with the habits you do every day? Glasses are an important aspect of your optical health and it’s important that you take good care of them. Here are three things to watch out for that might be harming your glasses more than you realize.

Storing them improperly.

Putting your glasses or sunglasses away in their case can seem like a hassle, but it’s really the best way to guarantee they stay in good shape. Keeping your glasses on your nightstand or on the counter can make them more prone to accidents that lead to scratches or other damage. It’s easy to knock a pair of glasses off a table, but if you keep them in their case they’ll at least be protected.
Plastic eyeglass frames can also become warped by heat if you leave them in your car. Try to store your eyewear in a temperature-controlled environment and don’t leave them sitting in the sun.

Exposing them to chemicals.

This seems like a no-brainer until you realize how many chemicals you interact with on a daily basis without even thinking about it. Have you ever worn your glasses while you used hairspray? Or sprayed a cleaning product? The chemicals in everyday products are enough to wear away any special coating on your glasses or, in some cases, even corrode the glass itself.
The best thing you can do for your glasses is to put them away whenever you’re handling any type of chemical ingredients and wear contact lenses instead. If you absolutely need them to see, be sure you’re spraying the product well away from your lenses and be prepared to clean your glasses immediately if anything splashes.

Cleaning them with the wrong materials.

It’s tempting to just wipe off your lenses with the end of your shirt, but cleaning your glasses this way can damage the lenses even with a soft fabric. If there are any particles of dust or dirt on the lenses or on your clothes, even ones too small for you to see, wiping the lenses can cause those particles to scratch the glass’s surface.
The best way to clean your glasses is to use a microfiber cloth with warm water so you can rinse away any particles before you rub the lenses.
