How to Fix Broken Glasses

If you prefer eyeglasses to contact lenses, there’s a good chance you may have to deal with a crack or break in your glasses at some point. While the exact fix depends on the nature of the problem, many common eyewear or sunglasses breaks can be easily fixed at home. Here are a few DIY solutions for common problems.

Broken Frame

If your eyeglass frames are plastic and they break, they can usually be fixed at home. First clean the exposed surfaces thoroughly using a dish soap, as any grease or oils from your fingers will affect the strength of the glue’s hold. Once the area is clean and dry, you can super glue the frames back together. Be aware that the glasses might break along this point again and treat them with care.

Metal frames, however, are a different story. If your metal frames have broken or come apart, it’s a good idea to take them in to be repaired. A professional can usually weld them back together, but this is dangerous to attempt on your own and could result in ruining the glasses completely.

Broken Arm

There are two common ways that the arm of your frames might break. First, if the screws holding the arms onto the frame come loose, the arm might fall off completely. Fortunately this is an easy fix, as many stores sell eyeglass repair kits that come with extra screws and a small screwdriver. Simply screw the arm back on and it should be good as new.
If the arm has snapped in two, you can bond it back together with super glue using the same technique you would use to fix a broken frame.

Cracked Lens

If lenses are scratched, you can rub a bit of toothpaste over the area to carefully buff out the marks. Rinse them with water and they should be as good as new!
Cracked lenses, on the other hand, are a problem best handled by the professionals. They usually can’t be fixed and will need to be replaced entirely. Your local Vancouver optician will be able to send the glasses away to be fixed. It might be inconvenient to have to take them in, but cracked lenses can pose a danger to your eyes in the long run. It’s a good idea to have the pros take care of it.
