How to Remove Lens Scratches

How to Remove Lens Scratches

If you wear eyeglasses, chances are you’ve had to deal with a scratch or two on your lenses at some point. Even people who prefer contact lenses have likely encountered a scratch on their sunglasses that can make it hard to see. New lenses can be expensive, but fortunately there are a few at-home fixes for lens scratches that you can easily try on your own. Here are three ways to remove lens scratches from your eyewear.

The Cloth Method

The first thing to try is simply rubbing the lens with a cloth to see if you can gently buff away the scratch. Holding the eyeglass frames firmly, use a microfiber cloth under running water to rub the lens in circular motions. Continue until the scratch is diminished.

This method is usually enough to buff out minor scratches, although you might need to repeat the process a few times until you’re happy with the results. It’s very important that you use a clean microfiber cloth, however, as other fabrics might make the damage worse.

Baking Soda

If using a cloth on its own wasn’t enough to buff out the scratches, you can try to form a paste of baking soda and water. You’ll only need about a pinch or so of baking soda and a few drops of water to get the right amount and consistency.

Using the microfiber cloth again, apply the paste to the scratched area and gently buff it in small circles. The slight grit that the baking soda provides is sometimes enough to remove a scratch without scratching the lens further. Note that if you have any protective coatings on your lens, this method might remove it from the scratched areas.

Vehicle Wax

For stubborn scratches that won’t come out, you can try using vehicle wax. This wax is made to fill in scratches on cars, and it can make your lens scratches far less noticeable when all other options have failed. Vehicle wax is safe for both glass and plastic lenses.

Simply buff a tiny bit of wax into your glasses using a microfiber cloth. Rub it in for a few minutes and then wipe away the excess wax, no need to rinse. Your glasses should look good as new in no time!
